The Green League 2008 is published tomorrow in the Times Higher Education Supplement.  The Green League is a ranking of how environmentally friendly British Universities are.  The results are based on 9 environmental criteria such as Co2 Emissions and the percentage of waste recycled for each institution. This is the second year the table has been published. Tomorrow hopefully I’ll be able to do an interview with someone from People and Planet the organisation which runs the Green League.

I recently spoke to Emily Doyle from The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) about the environmental photographer of the year awards which is part of CIWEM’s Arts and Environment intiative “putting creativity at the heart of environmental policy and action”.

The winners of the 2007 competition are going to be on display at the Apothecary Gallery in West London from the 30th May until the 18th July. The 2008 competition is open for entries up until the 31st July and is split into five different categories. For more information on how to enter click here.

Birmingham City University Student Union has started a petition to lobby the university for more recycling facilities around the campuses. You can sign the petition here and also check out the Facebook group. I spoke to representations and campaigns officer Alex Jewitt a while ago about the union’s stance on green issues and he spoke about the union’s plans to lobby for more recycling facilities. I don’t know why I never thought of sport as a way of educating people about the environment, but it looks like a great way to reach out to kids. Surfing the net recently, I came across a blog called 6footsix. It’s about the plans for a beach volleyball player called Colleen Smith to educate people about being more environmentally friendly and she aims to get kids involved by creating a “green team”.

I’m guessing if I were to talk face to face with her about the enviroment, at six foot six inches I’d probably listen to what she’s got to say! She puts temporary tattoos on her body to show how high the sea level will be in years to come to show the impact of global warming. It got me thinking about what other sportsmen and women are involved with educating people about the environment.

Frank Scura is the founder of the Action Sports Environmental Coalition (ASEC) and also Eco-resolutions which helps companies develop environmentally sustainable business practices. ASEC was formed in 2001 and has formed partnerships within the extreme sports world with skateboarders, surfers, BMX riders and also clothing and gear companies.

The coalition aims to educate people about the environment and also the extreme sports industry. It looks like its going to go far and hopefully more groups like these will start popping up within other sports too.

In other sports news the organising committee for the London 2012 Olympics has joined the ‘Supplier Ethical Data Exchange’.

They’ve also said the committee is working towards publishing a sustainable sourcing code later this year which principally means using recycled products and recycling as much as possible.

Universal Studios Hollywood is going to be celebrating Earth Day 2008 by having an “eco-fair” on April 26th. It will feature celebrity appearances and displays educating people about the environment. There is also going to be a collection of hazardous waste materials.

It’s all part of Universal’s “Green is Universal” campaign to raise awareness and to make NBC Universal’s practices more environmentally friendly.

I managed to speak to Hannah Newland, the newly elected representation and campaigns officer at Birmingham City University Union of Students, about environmental issues and what she thinks the union and university should be doing.
